Think that fancy U-lock is going to stop bike thieves? Wrong.

Enterprising outlaws will strip your bike, leaving only the frame. It's a regular feature of the bike racks outside Stony Brook Station, points out Hyde Square resident John Sullivan. He calls them "bike carcasses" and says that's what happens if you leave your ride overnight outside a T stop.

The city has a list of tips on how to keep your bike from being targeted. They include using both a U-lock and a cable lock, and making sure to secure any "quick release" parts like your front wheel.

There's a bike cage outside Forest Hills. To enter, you have to register your Charlie Card. It's free, but when you first register it will take about two hours before your card will open the cage. And though the "Pedal and Park" is on multiple video camera 24-7, that doesn't stop all thieves.
