Rise and shine, JP. Here's your Morning Memo for Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Airbnb in the Crosshairs: When the City Council takes up items that might affect JP residents, I try to give you a head's up. One such item is an order to be discussed at the Wednesday City Council meeting. Councilor Sal LaMattina wants to regulate popular services like Air BnB where you can rent your house or apartment out to strangers and make a nice little profit. I know several residents who rent their places. If that's you, keep an eye on the debate. Noon, City Council chambers at City Hall.
Food Insecurity and Displacement Also on City Council Agenda: Other items of note for Wednesday's meeting include two calls for hearings: One from JP District Councilor Matt O'Malley about food insecurity and one from Councilor Tito Jackson about displacement of residents (Specifically by corporate landlords and investors like City Realty, which recently purchased two Egleston Square buildings.) Also at noon, City Council chambers at City Hall.
Reminder — JP-Based Debo Band Plays Outdoor Show at the MFA: Debo Band, which has been getting buzz for its Ethiopian-inspired musical fusion, will headline an concert in the Museum of Fine Arts courtyard on Wednesday. I'm not sure if it's sold out, so be sure to contact the museum before you go. Doors open at 6 p.m., with music starting at 7:30 p.m.
Caribbean Festival Comes to Franklin Park: If Sunday's Dominican Parade and Festival has you wanting more Caribbean culture, no worries. It's festival season. On Saturday, the Caribbean Festival brings big beats, cultural costumes, dance and vendors to Franklin Park. There are two parades on Saturday: One from Morton Street at 7 a.m. and another at 1 p.m. from MLK Boulevard on the non-JP side of the park and ending in front of the zoo.
