General plan of the Casey Arborway project

The Casey Arborway project started in May 2015 (view the last car driving over the Casey Overpass) and consisted of removing the Casey Overpass that was structurally deficient and replacing it with an at-grade reconstructed roadway network. There will be a new fully accessible Orange Line access/egress headhouse to replace the former substandard exit only headhouse. There will be enhancements for bicyclists and pedestrians throughout the project's area. Once completed the project will result in the reconnection of the Arborway and Emerald Necklace Park from the Arnold Arboretum to Franklin Park.

Recent progress that was completed as of August 25th included the following: reopening of Forest Hills Street on its permanent alignment; reopening of Asticou Road on its permanent alignment; placed the westbound (towards the Arnold Arboretum) Arborway on its permanent alignment from Shea Square to a point roughly adjacent to the West Roxbury District Courthouse; and the beginning of the removal of the westbound temporary Arborway for conversion of this area into new green space and bicycle/pedestrian pathways.

During the week of September 4th, the focus of operations will include installing landscaping, adding bicycle accommodations, street lighting and more.

This week the following is expected to occur, but keep in mind all work is subject to change depending upon weather conditions.

Between Cemetery Road and Washington Street:

  • Installation of landscape walls along the westbound (towards the Arboretum) Arborway
  • Installation of bicycle accommodations from Forest Hills Street to a point approximately adjacent to the West Roxbury District Court
  • Installation of street lighting along the permanent alignment of the Arborway; construction of permanent conditions at the bottom of Orchardhill Road

For the section of the Arborway west (towards the Arboretum) of South Street:

  • Installation of 48” water line
  • Installation of drainage under the Arborway carriage road

For Washington Street west (towards the Arboretum) of Forest Hills Station:

  • Complete work in the center-of-road work zone
  • Shift operations to the eastern (towards Franklin Park) side of Washington Street
