White Stuff on Green Street

The snow is coming down hard in Jamaica Plain as of 6 p.m., but the MBTA is running, and a T worker is doing his part to keep the sidewalk clear around the Green Street station. Forecasters say that Boston could get 2 to 4 inches in this storm.

Wintry Mix on Sidewalks Will Turn to Ice

Many residents might have counted on this afternoon's rain to wash away the snow. But with freezing rain having already begun and expected to last until at least midnight, unshoveled sidewalks are going to be treacherous. The National Weather Service has issued a series of weather advisories for JP, including a freezing rain advisory. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice is expected to accumulate by dawn. The city requires property owners to keep the sidewalks in front of their personal or commercial properties clear of snow and ice.

Hailstorm Batters Jamaica Plain

Inmates Who Shoveled Out JP Earned $3-4 a Day

A public records request by ThinkProgress has finally answered the question of how much prisoners were paid to shovel out the Boston area this winter, including crews in JP. Turns out it was between $3 and $4 a day. Back in February, when the neighborhood was still blanketed in snow and ice, Jamaica Plain News had reached out to the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office for the figure. We never received a response. Among the areas shoveled by prisoners was Hyde Square.
