“Identity” Group Art Exhibition at UFORGE Gallery
July 10, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - August 3, 2014 @ 6:00 pm
FreeBOSTON, MA – UFORGE Gallery is pleased to present a new group exhibition for the month of July, titled “Identity.”
Despite attempts at objectivity and distance, it could be argued that all methods of expression are somehow personal, somehow related to the hand of the maker. For many artists, their identity is inextricably linked to their artwork, incorporating elements of biography, personality, gender, race, and sexuality. For others, it is hinted at in their process or use of material. For this open call exhibition, UFORGE Gallery asked artists to submit work that reflects their own identity, whether through self-portraits, emotional abstractions, political responses, or biographical musings. Artists were asked to consider how they define themselves, and how their experiences, struggles, and beliefs have shaped their artwork.
Artists—most of whom are local to the Boston area—responded in a variety of ways, submitting their own interpretations of the theme. Some painted self-portraits, others suggested personality traits through abstract compositions and mixed-media. Some reflected on their familial and societal positions, others on their own modes of communication and expression. Works on view include minimalist wooden sculptures by Ammon Embry-Pelrine, surreal collages by Christine Ledoux, and playful paintings by Boston poet Donald Vincent (Mr. Hip). The show also features work by Samantha Amerault, Joe Caruso, Yvonne Christian, Sally Guy, Marnie Jain, Edmundo James, Alexandra Jordankova, Tamas Kalmarnagy, Mark Logue, Christina Mok, Michael Richmond, Phil Ryan, Joanne Steeves, and Catherine Zimmerman, among others.
“Identity” is on view from July 10th through August 3rd, 2014, with a reception to be held on Thursday, July 10th from 6-8 PM.
The Jamaica Plain News calendar is open to all local organizations and businesses.
We examine all submissions after they go live. Please be sure to include your email address so we can reach you in case there's a problem!
