Kamishibai: Japanese Story-Box Theater

December 7, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 pm

Free

Kamishibai (kami=paper, shibai=theater) is a traditional form of telling stories with drawings inside a portable theater-box. A kamishibai performer in olden times would hitch a wooden theater onto a bicycle and travel from place to place, recounting folk tales and adventures.

Shunsuke Yamaguchi has recreated the wooden story theater for our times, using his own original drawings, with cutouts and moving parts, to tell modern adaptations of traditional tales. His bright, lively drawings and his sense of humor bring two tales to life: Momotaro: The Peach Boy and one other surprise.

This program is geared to children from pre-school through Grade 5, but it is accessible for all ages.
