Okie the gorilla is moving to the Big Easy!
November 18 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
On November 18, guests are invited to attend a going away party at Franklin Park Zoo for western lowland gorilla Okpara, affectionately known as Okie. The 24-year-old gorilla will soon move to his new home at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans where it is hoped that he will be successful in starting a family of his own.
Throughout the day, be sure to stop by the Education table to learn more about gorillas and important conservation work being done on behalf of these endangered species. There will also be zookeeper encounters, as well as a giant card that guests can sign for Okie. In honor of Okie’s new home, the festivities will be New Orleans themed and Okie and the rest of the gorillas will enjoy enrichment and treats made especially for them.
Zoo New England is an active participant in the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is a cooperative, inter-zoo program coordinated nationally through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). SSPs help to ensure the survival of selected species in zoos and aquariums, most of which are threatened or endangered and enhance conservation of these species in the wild.
Zoo New England is proud to support conservation work on behalf of gorillas through the Ape TAG Conservation Initiative, as well as through a cell phone recycling program. Coltan, used in the production of cell phones, is mined from central African forests right in the gorillas’ habitat. By recycling cell phones, the need for additional coltan mining is reduced, and in turn, habitat destruction. Guests to Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo can drop off their old cell phones, which are recycled through the Eco-Cell program.
