Budget: Mayor Asks Department Heads How They’d Cut 5 Percent

According to the Herald, this year’s city budget season began with the Walsh administration pressing each department to show how they’d carve 5 percent off their spending.

The directive could simply be an exercise to show priorities, but the city’s new Chief Financial Officer called such cuts “significant but also achievable.”

Mayor Martin J. Walsh, in his first State of the City address tonight, is expected to trumpet new investments in schools and other services – and he wants to put his stamp on the Hub by asking his other department heads to look at cutting their budgets by a whopping 5 percent by next week, the Herald has learned.
