City Councilors: Employers Shouldn’t Use Credit Checks to Discriminate

Two Boston City Councilors have proposed an ordinance to prevent employment discrimination based on credit checks. District 4 City Councilor Andrea Campbell and At-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley cosponsored the proposed ordinance that will be discussed on Sept. 29 in a public hearing. The current City of Boston Code protects people from being discriminated based on a host of things: race, sex, gender identity or expression, age, ability, national origin ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, parental status, ex-offender status, prior psychiatric treatment and military status. But some employers use credit checks as a determining factor to hire a possible employee. The ordinance states, "...individuals burdened with student loans, medical bills, or those who have been involved in the criminal justice system," are being adversely affected while seeking employment.

Ayanna Pressley Got the Most Votes in JP in At-Large City Council Election

At-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley not only topped the ticket across all of Boston in Tuesday's elections, but she received the most votes in Jamaica Plain, too. Pressley netted a total of 3,571 votes from Jamaica Plain's 20 precincts. Fellow incumbent Michelle Wu, who finished second throughout all of Boston, also came in second in JP with 3,161 votes. At-Large City Councilor-elect Annissa Essaibi-George, who came in fourth overall. came in third in JP with 2,796 votes.

Boston Elections: Essaibi-George Wins At-Large Seat; Campbell Defeats Yancey in District 4 Race

Tuesday's Boston City Council elections saw two longtime city councilors lose their seats. In the at-large city council race, Annissa Essaibi-George of Dorchester earned a seat in her second time running for the position. Losing his seat is longtime city councilor Stephen Murphy, who was first elected in 1997. All results are from the City of Boston's Election Department. According to the department, about 13% of registered Boston voters turned out for this municipal election.

District 4 Candidates Yancey & Campbell on Policing, Affordable Housing and More at Forum

Public safety, education and affordable housing were major issues discussed at a District 4 Boston City Council forum with incumbent Charles Yancey, 66, and challenger Andrea Campbell, 33, held at the Great Hall in Codman Square on Monday evening. The two will square off on November 3rd. In the September preliminary Campbell received 1,982 votes or 57%, Yancey, who was first elected in 1984, received 1,159 votes or 33%. All statistics are according to the City of Boston’s Elections Department website. District 4 represents Mattapan, Dorchester and a little bit of Jamaica Plain. Ward 19, Precinct 12, is the JP portion.
