Café Beirut Closes Citing Regional and Worldwide ‘Socio-Political Events’

Lebanese restaurant Café Beirut closed permanently this past weekend, wishing good luck to the next occupant of its Centre Street spot, and encouraging people to support local businesses. In recent years the restaurant was known for its varied menu with large portions and authentic Lebanese fair such as pumpkin kibby, cod samak, bastorma, as well as falafel, kabobs, roll-ups, shawarma, and more. A note in the window explained why the business was closing:

Yum! 23rd Annual Taste of Jamaica Plain on Nov. 15

Blue Nile, Chilacates, Café Beirut, FoMu, The Frogmore and Tres Gatos are just some of the participating businesses in the 23rd Annual Taste of Jamaica Plain on Nov. 15. This year's Taste of Jamaica Plain has a new location at Our Lady of Annunciation Church on the West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain border. In recent years the Taste of JP has been held at the Franklin Park Zoo. While the event is moving inside this year, it will still benefit a good neighborhood organization, Ecumenical Social Action Committee (ESAC), its senior home programs and youth opportunity collaborative.

Calling All Gourmands: New Tour Highlights Jamaica Plain Food

A new tour with a Jamaica Plain foodie focus is making its way through the neighborhood while encompassing history, dessert, beer and delicious food. "We truly believe JP has the freshest, yummiest food in town," said Lizzie Bell, co-owner of Off The Beaten Path Food Tours and Experiences. With her husband Sam Schlussel, the duo launched the tour company, which has featured food tours in Harvard Square, Davis Square and Union Square. They launched their Jamaica Plain tour in March, and it's given on weekends. "Time and again, I found myself visiting Jamaica Plain because there is an incredible food scene here with lots of unique stories and history as well as a strong, neighborly culture that shines through," said Bell.

Café Beirut Needs Your Help with Rent After Thousands Stolen

Jamaica Plain restaurant Café Beirut is asking for help from the community to make its rent after someone stole thousands from the Lebanese eatery. A GoFundMe page was created on Dec. 19th to raise $6,500 to "keep Café Beirut in the community." The fundraising page says it all:
Recently, it was discovered that several thousand dollars had been stolen from the coffers of Café Beirut. Though the perpetrator has been identified and proper action is being taken, it appears unlikely that money will be recovered in time to cut the rent check, if at all.
