A reincarnation of James's Gate could swing open as soon as January, according to Paul Byrne, manager and owner of the proposed pub. "The Gate," as the new venue would be called, would open in the Egleston Square space occupied for the last four years by Coco's Lounge at 3171 Washington St. A neighborhood board voted unanimously to support the project at a hearing Tuesday. Byrne, a fixture in JP restaurant circles, co-owned James's Gate with Christy Page. The two parted ways over the abrupt closure of the McBride Street landmark a year ago in September.

State Rep. Liz Malia was proud to recognize Urban Edge Housing Corporation for their recent receipt of state and federally funded housing tax credits that will enable them to build 49 new units of affordable family housing in the Egleston Square neighborhood. The Walker Park Apartments is a new construction project sponsored by Urban Edge that the Massachusetts Department of Housing & Community Development will support with federal and state funds. The City of Boston also is providing funds to the project, according to a press release from Malia (D-Jamaica Plain). Of the 49 units, eight will be reserved for households earning less than 30% of area median income.
The Attorney General's office ruled that a major city board intentionally violated the Open Meeting Law the day it gave final approval for a bellwether development at 3200 Washington St. Public notice laws let residents know what subjects government boards will discuss. The office of Attorney General Maura Healey announced on Friday that the Zoning Board of Appeals acted improperly by failing to post that 3200 Washington St. would be up for a vote. The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council (JPNC) Housing and Community Development Committee unanimously rejected the proposed 44-unit 3353 Washington St. rental development at its meeting last week. The opposition point of view was summed up succinctly by committee member Pam Bender: "You are doing the bare minimum" for affordable housing and community benefits, she told developer Boston Community Ventures. The May 10 meeting followed a contentious Small Project Review public meeting April 28 sponsored by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) at which neighbors expressed little love for the project, which would be located at the corner of Washington and Green streets across from the E-13 district police station. The JPNC may register its own vote on the project at its meeting Tuesday, May 24.
