As 2017 begins, here's a look at the five most-read stories of 2016 here at Jamaica Plain News. 5. Man Shot Outside 7-Eleven
Luckily, and thanks the efforts of police and residents, crime was not overall a huge story in JP in 2016. However, isolated violence did continue this past year. Jeffrey Kelly, 28, was killed outside the South Huntington 7-Eleven in August.
There's a new shop cat at Ivy Insurance, and he's already delighting both the business' owner and the Jamaica Plain neighborhood at large, following beloved shop cat Ivy II's passing in August. "He's a very, very sweet cat," said Ivy Insurance owner Tim Foley of the beautiful 16-year-old feline. "He's extremely friendly and a little shy." Like his predecessor, the cat in the insurance company's window on South Street was quickly spotted by passersby, and there's little doubt he will become popular and celebrated like Ivy II. The "new" cat was previously named Sugar.
A chalk drawing outside Ivy Insurance on South Street memorializing Ivy the shop cat, who passed away Aug. 22 at the age of 15, is one of many remembrances to emerge this week in honor of the beloved JP feline. The day after Ivy passed away, Jamaica Plain News visited the storefront and observed Ivy's collar in his cat bed, which was surrounded by photos of the orange and white cat. This week, additional person remembrances have been placed on the window at Ivy Insurance, including this note from a young Ivy fan addressed to Tim Foley, Ivy's owner. In addition, the Jamaica Plain News staff is very touched by the outpouring of online tributes to Ivy that were shared with us via social media after we reported the sad news last week of Ivy's passing.
Each weekday we post a random image from around the neighborhood. Here is one of JP's well-known shop cats, Ivy of Ivy Insurance on South Street. She's philosophically framed by JP artist Lindsay Metivier. Of course Ivy is just one of the shop cats of South Street. Here's a little feature on "Monkey," the shop kitty who rules the portion of South closer to Forest Hills.
