CPA Funding Approved for New Curley School Playground, Jackson Square Greenway, Churches, and More

Community Preservation Act funds will be used to build a new school playground, support new affordable housing, and historically rehab several churches,

Mayor Michelle announced 56 projects will receive more than $40 million through CPA funds. The Boston City Council approved the funding on April 12. By law, projects must support the creation or preservation of affordable housing, historic sites, or open space and recreation. Since 2018, Boston has awarded more than $157 million to support 293 projects including 112 open space and recreation projects, 46 affordable housing projects, and 135 historic preservation projects, according to a press release. The following are the eight Jamaica Plain projects that are receiving funding:

Curley School Teacher Receives Educator of the Year Award

A Mary E. Curley School teacher was one of several Boston Public School teachers awarded as Educators of the Year by the Boston Public Schools and Boston Teachers Union. Third grade and SEI teacher Konstantinos Petmezis was one of six teachers named as Educators of the Year. "The best thing about teaching is the community. I've been working at The Curley since 2007 and believe that the whole Curley Community deserves an award for what we were able to accomplish last year," said Petmezis to Jamaica Plain News. "It was together that we navigated remote learning and made it through.

Curley K-8 School 20th Annual Plant Sale

The Curley K-8 School’s 20th Annual Plant Sale will be in the parking lot across from the school on Centre Street and Spring Park Ave. Celebrate spring and come and get your annuals, herbs, and vegetables. There will also be activities for the kids. This fundraiser, sponsored by the Parent’s Council, supports arts, music and science at the school.

JP Students, Staff Running in Playworks Run for Recess 5K on May 19th

This Saturday students and staff members from four Jamaica Plain schools, and anyone else wanting to participate, are running in the 9th Annual Playworks Run for Recess 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Taking place on Franklin Park's cross country course adjacent to the zoo, funds raised will go to support play and physical activity in 140 elementary schools across New England. The annual Playworks Run for Recess 5K are presented by Playworks New England in partnership with the New Balance Foundation. The following schools from Jamaica Plain will be represented: Boston Teachers Union Pilot School, Joseph P. Manning Elementary School, Match Community Day School and Mary E. Curley K-8 School. Local team members will join an expected 1,000 participants, including students and families representing 49 elementary schools in the Greater Boston area, who will run with the collective goal of raising $15,000 for Playworks New England. In its 12th year, the nonprofit, which is part of a national organization, brings play and youth development programming into schools during recess as a means to improve the health and well-being of children and to enhance learning through the power of play.
