JP Home to Four of Region’s Top 50 Pieces of Public Art

Several pieces of art familiar to anyone from JP made WBUR's list of the top 50 pieces of public art in Greater Boston. We won't spoil all the enjoyment, as scrolling through Greg Cook's well-reasoned list is half the fun. But we were happy to see Rafael Rivera García's epic mural of Taino mythology at No. 20. Click through for Cook's full fifty to find the four that are in JP.

New ‘Welcome to Jackson Square’ Mural on Centre Street

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation  thought that Jackson Square needed something more inviting than a brick MBTA building wall for people to look at when coming out of Jackson Square station. The MBTA agreed and the NDC  asked JP artist Alex Cook to design a mural on the 60 foot brick wall of the MBTA's Engineering and Maintenance of Way Facility on Centre and Lamartine Streets.  After the NDC held a series of brainstorming meetings with Bromley Heath residents and other neighbors,Alex came up with a design. He and and his assistant prepared the wall Thursday and drew the cartoon Friday

On Saturday over 25 volunteers under Alex's watchful eye painted the mural and most of it was completed by days end. The Jamaica Plain News dropped by Saturday afternoon to watch the work/

Fight Over San Francisco Neighborhood’s Mural Has Lessons for JP

The resolution of a community-dividing dispute in a San Francisco neighborhood has lessons for JP, one sociologist told the crowd at the most recent JP Forum. Beth Roy, a longtime mediator in the Bay Area, gave a talk titled, “Mediating Gentrification: How One Community Created Unity Out Of Divisiveness.”

Roy shared how she helped mediate an eight-year dispute in her own changing neighborhood of Bernal Heights. The San Francisco neighborhood is similar to JP, with an "urban village" feel, according to the San Francisco Gate. In 1980 the community branch library created vibrant murals on its exterior walls. And 30 years later, the adored branch library was being renovated.

Rafael Rivera García (1929-2014)

Rafael Rivera García, Painter of Hyde Square Mural, Dies in Puerto Rico

An artist whose Hyde Square mural became a landmark has died at 85. Rafael "Sonny" Rivera García, died Friday in Puerto Rico, according to his son, Boricua Rivera. In 1984, the elder Rivera painted a mural on Perkins Street that honors the Taino culture of what is today Puerto Rico. The mural has since been restored twice and come to be a symbol of Jamaica Plain in general and Hyde-Jackson squares in particular. Sonny Rivera's murals have adorned public spaces in Miami; San Juan and Guanica, Puerto Rico; and New York City.

An Echo of Taino Culture Survives in Mural

Each weekday we post a random image from around the neighborhood. This is Kelly Alice's view of the mural that honors the Taino people. The mural, which has been restored since it was originally painted by Rafael Rivera García, is on the back of the Whole Foods building. The Tainos were the original inhabitants of what is today Puerto Rico. Long believed to have been completely wiped out by Christopher Columbus and the European diseases he and his crews brought to the Caribbean, vestiges of the Tainos' culture survive.
