Snake Nest, Er, Tire Sculpture Festoons Brookside Home

Snakes, er, old bike tires festoon the back of a Brookside Avenue apartment, Tuesday, July 28, 2015. At first glance, this collection of old bike tires gave me a heart attack. But it isn't a nightmare collection of snakes. It's art. Each weekday we post a “Photo of the Day” from around the neighborhood.

One of the great things about JP is how many community gardens you'll find hidden all over the neighborhood. To assuage that nagging feeling that you've missed some of them, here's a handy interactive map of all the community gardens in Boston. Each weekday we post a “Photo of the Day” from around the neighborhood. If you have a photo that screams (or even whispers) "Jamaica Plain," here are four ways to nominate it:

These photographs, taken on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., are a reminder of what the clearing of the original Arborway looked like when it was begun in 1893. Not certain if Charles George Trash was in business at that time... See all our Casey Overpass/Casey Arborway coverage here.

Arborway Parking, Circa 1939

Automobiles line the Arborway in front of the Arnold Arboretum. Circa 1939. Courtesy of Boston Public Library, Jamaica Plain branch. At first glance it might seem these historical autos are caught in some demonic traffic time warp. But this 1939 photo isn't of a backup along the Arborway.

Get Onto Their Lawn

A pedestrian crosses the grounds at the Loring-Greenough House on June 16, 2015. A pedestrian enjoys the lawn at the Loring-Greenough House earlier this summer. When the Perkins School For the Blind Was in JP

Students in Miss Roeske's music appreciation class at the Perkins Institution for the Blind. Located at the corner of Perkins and Day Streets in Hyde Square, the school was founded in 1887 and served children through age nine. For general instruction, students were segregated by sex. As you can see in the photograph, African-American children were welcomed. The school was an outgrowth of the Perkins Institution for the Blind in South Boston, founded by Samuel Gridley Howe.
