$300K Damage as Three-Alarm Fire Torches Dunster Road Home

A Fire Department spokesman reported via Twitter that crews responded at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of fire in the rear of the two-family building. Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze. One of the units was vacant and two people who were living in the other unit are staying with family or friends. Fire officials tweeted that the house was at 46 Dunster, but at least one resident Tweeted that the address was actually 38 Dunster Road. [Editor's note: The original post incorrectly listed the home as being on Dunster Street.]

Yoshi Walsh of Streight Angular: Jamaica Plain’s Next Big Thing?

It is Saturday afternoon at Jamaica Pond. Music is pumping, the growing crowd is dancing, and Yoshi Walsh is taking a dive. Not into the water, but into his audience; a large collection of Bostonians who have ventured to see his band, Streight Angular, play at the fifth annual Jamaica Plain Music Festival. Walsh, a colorful Pennsylvania native who currently resides in Jamaica Plain, has always been a free spirit, but found a specific love and sense of freedom in making music. Starting his artistic career during a brief stint in college, Walsh spent most of his free time practicing painting, writing poetry and teaching himself guitar.

GennaRose Nethercott, who recently moved to Jamaica Plain, sets up her table and typewriter at the Pond and writes poems for strangers. Each poem takes her five to seven minutes. She'll type it up, sign it and hand it to you. She simply asks patrons to pay her whatever they think the poem is worth. Toxic Algae Levels Triple in Jamaica Pond

The level of toxic algae in closed-to-the-public Jamaica Pond has tripled since the last test. Humans and their pets must stay out of Jamaica Pond until officials give the all-clear. The state considers safe levels of this algae to be 70,000 cells per milliliter of water. Tests done Monday showed the Pond's figure to have risen to 240,000 cells per milliliter of water, according to a press release from the Boston Public Health Commission. The previous week the level stood at 81,576 cells/milliliter.

Car Strikes and Kills Deer on Jamaicaway

State Police confirm that a deer and car collided on the Jamaicaway early Sunday morning. The deer died. The incident took place about 2:10 a.m. at the intersection with Lochstead Avenue, State Police said.
