As part of the festivities at Monday's National Night Out in Egleston Square, one nearby Neighborhood Watch group brought home a special honor.

Police named the Brewery District Neighborhood Watch as "Crime Watch of the Year." Several members of the neighborhood group turned out to accept the award.

Donna Tremonte, one of the main organizers of the group, said she and John Sheeran had lived in JP for 10 years, but only recently became involved in formally keeping an eye on their street and getting to know their neighbors. The tipping point for Tremonte from passive worries about crime to taking action?

"I think it was just feeling powerless," she said, "to stop feeling like a victim."

The couple has had attempted break-ins on their single family home. Once Tremonte and others decided to start a neighborhood watch, the Sam Adams Brewery kicked in by giving them a place to meet. She said police have offered support all along the way as the group has grown.

"The officers have been awesome," Tremonte said.

If you'd like to find out if your street has a crime watch or want to start one, police ask that you contact the Neighborhood Watch Group at 617-343-4345 or John Sheeran, left, and Donna Tremonte are among the organizers of the Brewery District Neighborhood Watch, which won "Crime Watch of the Year" for 2014.[/caption]
