JP is Fourth-Most Cutthroat Real Estate Market in Nation

Boston.com talked to real estate company Redfin about a new survey that bears out what many would-be JP homeowners will tell you: Our neighborhood is brutal for buyers.

Redfin puts 02130 as the fourth-most competitive Zip Code in the nation. That's behind three Zips in San Francisco.

Nearly three out of four homes sold here last year brought in multiple offers. And 60 percent of sales went for more than asking.

Personal anecdote: When my wife and I were trying to move back to JP this summer, we found ourselves in a bidding war for a third-floor two-bedroom on Brookley Avenue. We bid $362,500 (way over asking) and waived inspection. I heard later the place went for $401,00, making it the first home on the street to break the $400K barrier.

[Editor's note: At a reader's prompting, we looked into the methodology of this survey. It is based on the percentage of offers brokered by Redfin agents where there was competition, plus Multiple Listing Service data. Here'a link to the original report.]
