Is a resurrection of Jamaica Plain's beloved James's Gate restaurant and pub in the works? According to the agenda for a Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council meeting this week, a new Gate may indeed be a-brewin'.

A notice regarding the agenda for the neighborhood council's public service committee meeting, scheduled to take place Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at Curtis Hall, includes the following item:

On the agenda will be a petition from Coco's Lounge at 3169-3171 Washington St. for a transfer of its 7-day common victualler all-alcoholic beverages license to The Gate at the same location with a 1 a.m. closing hour, with Paul Byrne as manager.

Byrne was the co-owner of James's Gate, which abruptly closed just over a year ago, much to the chagrin of its many neighborhood fans, after 18 years of serving up suds, pub fare and trivia nights on McBride Street.

At that site, a developer has proposed a five-story, mixed-use building -- dubbed "The Gate" -- that could also include commercial space (possibly a restaurant) on the ground floor. A local group has looked to open a community-owned bar at the site.
