The Boston Housing Authority is seeking proposals from private developers to redevelop an increasingly rundown portion of the Mildred C. Hailey apartments complex in Jackson Square, reports the Boston Globe.

The request for proposals covers six buildings at the complex along Centre Street, Parker Street and Lamartine Street. Officials are seeking a private developer because there is reportedly no federal money to repair or rebuild the 804 federally subsidized public housing units at the complex, known until last year as Bromley Heath.

According to the Globe, residents in the 232 subsidized units at the complex that would be torn down and rebuilt would receive apartments in the new buildings for the same rents they pay now, but they would also be living alongside market-rate renters in the newly built units -- a possibility that did not sit well with some of the residents interviewed for the story.

“They’ll basically get first dibs on whatever the community has to offer, because they’re paying the more expensive rate,” said 25-year-old Corey McMillen, who has spent his whole life in the complex. “Satisfy your money first, and take care of everybody else after.”
