State Representative Liz Malia welcomed David Waters, CEO of Community Servings, to the State House to recognize his selection as a finalist for a Nonprofit Network Excellence in Leadership Award.
Community Servings delivers 560,000 free, medically tailored and culturally appropriate homestyle meals to 1,850 people per year who are too sick to cook for themselves or their families, like a prescription in the food-as-medicine model. They also provide nutrition education to the public and workforce development opportunities, which focus on individuals recovering from substance-use disorders, many of whom are reentering society after incarceration.
Each year, the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network honors the movers, shakers, innovators, and policy makers who are doing their part of shaping our communities for the better. This year, 26 finalists from throughout the Commonwealth were chosen in categories such as Innovation, Youth Professionals, Small Nonprofit, Collaboration, Advocacy and Leadership. Massachusetts was the first state in the country to have an annual Nonprofit Awareness Day, which was recognized and signed into law in 2008.
