July marks the 20th consecutive monthly vigil since December 2015 at the church located at 633 Centre St. The vigil provides the opportunity for participants to take a stand against white supremacy and for racial justice and human rights, wrote Penny Wells in an email to Jamaica Plain News.

The guest speaker this month is Andrea James. James is the founder and executive director of Families for Justice As Healing, which aims to create alternatives to incarceration. She is a Boston native and has worked within the criminal justice system for more than 25 years, and was also formerly incarcerated. James was deeply affected by the great number of women who are in prison and committed herself to fulfilling the promise she made to women who remain in prison -- to speak their truth, to advocate for an end to the war on drugs and to support a shift from punishment toward community wellness.

The vigil is from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
