Customers will be charged no less than 5 cents for each paper bag at retail establishments as part of the new plastic bag ordinance -- and Stop & Shop will be donating all of the money it takes in from the paper bag fee to the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.

The plastic bag ordinance begins on Dec. 14, and it requires any bag provided by a retail business to a customer must be either a reusable bag, a recyclable paper bag or a compostable plastic bag. The new fee will show up on customers' receipts letting them know about it.

To get into the spirit of the reusable bags, Stop & Shop is also giving away a free reusable bag on Dec. 14 to the first 300 customers at each of their 10 Boston stores, including the Jackson Square Stop & Shop.

The supermarket chain will also be offering reusable EcoLoop bags for 10 cents apiece, which are made from 80 percent recycled material.
