Food Pantry at First Church Seeing Rise in Demand Due to Government Shutdown, Donations Needed

The food pantry at Jamaica Plain's First Church is in need of donations as it has seen a rise in demand due to the federal government shutdown.

The food pantry regularly serves about 120 people per month, according to the First Church in Jamaica Plain's website.

Spontaneous Celebrations sent out an email asking for donations:

If you have any of the following items you are able to contribute to the food pantry they would greatly appreciate it! We will put a bin by our front desk. Unexpired staples such as: soups with protein, pasta sauce, peanut butter, tuna and sardines, cereal, canned vegetables and fruits, toothpaste & dish soap. Other specialty items like jam, coffee, tea, kids juice packs, women's sanitary products are also welcome. Please bring in items before February 7th.

Spontaneous Celebrations is located at 45 Danforth St. Universalhub.com reported that Unlimited Sotheby's International Realty (673 Centre St.) and East Boston Savings Bank (515 Centre St.) are also accepting items for the food pantry.

The food pantry is regularly open the first and third Thursday of each month from 11 am to noon from September through June. The next scheduled dates of the food pantry are Feb. 7 and 21.

The food pantry serves people of all ages, races and circumstances and, "Many have never asked for this kind of help before but now are in need because of job loss, fewer work hours, or medical costs."

The food pantry doesn't ask for identification or documentation of any kind. We do not ask for identification of documentation of any kind.  The pantry also provides fresh produce and bakery bread.

The pantry is regularly funded mostly by the church's congregation with additional help from local grocery stores and bakeries. You can also donate canned goods and other non-perishable items directly to the church by contacting the church office at firstchurchjpoffice@gmail.com or 617-524-1634.

Monetary donations are also welcome and checks can be sent to the First Church JP at 6 Eliot St., office payable to the church with the notation “food pantry” on the memo line.
