Wind Advisory — Gusts Could Hit 60 MPH

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Jamaica Plain and surrounding areas saying gusts could reach 60 MPH through 8 p.m. Tuesday. After that, the wind advisory continues through 5 p.m. Wednesday. The strong winds could bring down large limbs or even trees, forecasters say. Driving could also be difficult.

And then's there's all the post-snow trash. It'll be nice to have that blown all over the streets...

‘An Inch or Two’ of Snow Could Hit Sunday Afternoon

Whether you're all in to break the city's snow record or in the "no more please" camp, forecasters say to expect "an inch or two" on Sunday. Boston is less than two inches away from breaking the all-time record for snow accumulation. It was set in 1995/1996 when we got 107.6 inches. The National Weather Service said rain should change over to snow between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday. They say accumulation is expected on paved surfaces.

More Snow Coming Tuesday Night

Forecasters differ on how much snow Boston will see late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service predicts 3 to 5 inches, while WHDH estimates 4 inches and WCVB calls for 2-4 inches on the coast but just a dusting inland. The city has received 100 inches of snow this season, though as meteorologist David Epstein points out, it depends on how you measure it. In other snow now, in case you missed it, Mayor Marty Walsh said residents can keep using space savers indefinitely. He's temporarily lifting the "Menino rule" to use them no more than 48 hours after the end of a declared snow emergency.

Brrr. Wind Chill of 18 Below Possible Friday Morning

The National Weather Service warns of dangerous cold in Jamaica Plain starting at 3 a.m. Friday. It issued an advisory to expect wind chills of -18 and temperatures of zero. That's cold even by our recent standards. The advisory runs from 3-10 a.m. Friday. The Jamaica Plain-based MSPCA reminds us that the cold can be dangerous for pets.

Snow Melter Toils Away at Arborway Yard

Barletta Heavy Construction used a Canadian made snow melter to evaporate tons of snow removed from tracks by the MBTA. The melted snow is pumped into  Stony Brook  which flows northeasterly in a 7 foot brick culvert under the busyard. Credit: Richard Heath

For snow-weary residents, it can be a beautiful sight: Piles and piles of the stuff being melted away. That's what's happening right in Forest Hills as crews work the snow melter at the Arborway Yard. Here are a few photos.

Inmates Shovel Hyde Square

UPDATE, Friday, April 3: We finally know how much those inmates made. ~~~~~

A team of prisoners was shoveling Hyde Square on Tuesday. Teams of convicts have been dispatched to various parts of the region as Boston battles record snowfall. WHDH reported inmates were also set to work on the Red Line around Braintree. The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office reported last week that it had sent seven crews of 61 inmates out to help dig out from the storm.

Space saver signs on Dalrymple Street, Feb. 15, 2015.

‘The Snow is Making People Crazy’

A resident sent us this photo report on an escalating word-battle over space savers on Dalrymple Street in Egleston. It begins:

The sign above gives the URL for the city's policy on space savers: They should be removed no later than 48 hours after the end of snow emergency. At left is a pile of space savers the sign writer removed from shoveled spaces on the street, according to a neighbor:

That prompted this response:

And this rebuttal. In case you can't read the right-most sign, it says:
It does, however, reflect the view of many others. Look, shoveling sucks but everyone has to do it.
