Boston Lyric Opera’s Annex Production of ‘In the Penal Colony’
November 11, 2015 @ 7:30 pm
$50.00Event Navigation

BLO’s Opera Annex production of Philip Glass’s In the Penal Colony is a one-act, three-character chamber opera based on the 1914 Franz Kafka short story: a pitch-black fable about crime and a very unusual punishment. Performed in English, with Glass’s signature driving music composed for string quintet, In the Penal Colony tells the story of The Officer and The Visitor and an ominous machine designed to punish prisoners for their crimes. The production is directed by BLO Emerging Artist alumnus R. B. Schlather, now making waves and getting critical raves for his exciting, unconventional productions. Emmanuel Music Artistic Director Ryan Turner conducts. In the Penal Colony marks the return of two BLO Emerging Artist alumni: tenor Neal Ferreira (The Visitor) and baritone David McFerrin (The Officer). Former Boston Ballet principal Yury Yanowsky appears as The Soldier.
