The Cooper Gallery’s inaugural summer exhibition, THE WOVEN ARC

June 9, 2016 @ 10:00 am - July 16, 2016 @ 5:00 pm

free

Inspired by and featuring recent acquisitions to the Cooper Gallery’s permanent collection, as well as loaned items from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, THE WOVEN ARC features a selection of sculptures, paintings, conceptual art pieces, print works, video and legacy textiles by a coterie of international artists that creates a colorful visual dialogue within the space. Central to the exhibition are pieces from the Gallery’s collection: a towering “Soundsuit” from visual and performance artist Nick Cave; “Six by Six,” a painting by mixed-media artist Peter Sacks from his “Aftermath” series; and a stunning “Food Faerie” sculpture by contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare. Works by El Anatsui, Grace Ndiritu, Glenn Ligon, Lina Iris Viktor and others both activate--and find kinship with--traditional African textiles and wearable items from the 19th and 20th centuries. Curated by Cooper Gallery Director Vera Ingrid Grant.
