Your Guide to First Thursday Artwalk

The next-to-last First Thursday Artwalk of the season is here. And it's massive. Here's a map and guide to the festivities, which will draw thousands of people to central JP from 5-9 p.m. Thursday. The basic concept is that businesses all up and down the Centre/South corridor host art exhibits, concerts, food tastings, etc. It's a JP tradition that is organized by Centre/South Main Streets.

Wes Anderson’s ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Screens on the Green

Hello, JP! Here's your Morning Memo for all things Jamaica Plain for Thursday, Sept. 4. Free Screening of "The Royal Tenenbaums": All week we've been previewing aspects of the First Thursday Art Walk (like the Canadian Bacon sandwich on offer and live music from an all-female Queen tribute band). The unsettled weather won't stop this month's First Thursday Art Walk or the "Screen on the Green" showing of "Little Mermaid." As everyone knows, rain and thunderstorms are expected late Thursday. But that isn't stopping the forty locations hosting art exhibits along Centre/South. A free showing of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," has been confirmed for outdoors at the Loring-Greenough House at 12 South St. The plan had been, at worst, to move the film indoors to 668 Centre St., beside City Feed.

You'd expect the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to be against raising the minimum wage. And you'd be right. But what about business owners right here in JP? It's a more complicated picture than you might think. While it's true that Jamaica Plain votes well to the left of much of the country, small business bottom lines are still bottom lines.

Centre/South Business Group Adds Eight Board Members

It's no secret that business is competitive. But in JP, it's also cooperative. Andrew Zarro, executive director of JP Centre/South Main Streets, put it this way: "One of the things that's great about JP is that business owners want other businesses to succeed." Last week eight local business owners and community leaders joined the board of Centre/South Main Streets. That brings the number of board members to 15, making it the organization's largest board since it began in 2002.
