H.G. Wells Would Dig This Video of Casey Destruction

A local filmmaker shot this War of the Worlds-like scene of heavy equipment gnawing at the piers of the Casey Overpass. Thanks, mike g, for sharing this with Jamaica Plain News readers. The streams of water you see are required to keep down construction dust. The Department of Transportation on Monday announced this phase of night work would finish July 2. Casey Night Work Could Wrap Before July 4

The current round of nighttime demolition of the Casey Overpass is scheduled to finish on July 2, according to an email from the Department of Transportation. On Monday, officials sent out a "three-week look-ahead" describing major aspects of the Casey Arborway project during that period. Among the highlights (or lowlights, depending on your attitude and proximity to the noise) is that the tear-down of the piers along Washington Street and at the 39 Bus stop will continue the weeks of June 22 and 29. Other major points:

There will be no work on Saturday, July 4, for Independence Day. In the Arborway Yard, temporary courthouse parking will be completed.

Night Work Begins on Casey Arborway

Night work began on the massive Casey Arborway project at 8 p.m. Sunday. It is expected to run at least a week. Here's what the Department of Transportation had to say about the change:

Beginning Sunday night June 14th, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., nighttime demolition operations will begin on the Casey Overpass between Washington Street and South Street. As has been stated at public information meetings, nighttime work will take place on those sections of the Overpass which are above traffic which would need to be detoured away from the work zone for safety reasons. State officials say there will always be two weeks' notice for residents before any night work begins.

It’s Shuttle Buses, Not Subway Service for Orange Line Next Two Weekends

Just in case subway riders haven't gotten a taste of Casey Arborway construction traffic, the T will be putting Orange Line passengers in shuttle buses this Saturday and Sunday, and again next weekend. The shuttle buses will be running so track and signal work can be done. The closures are in both directions from Ruggles to Forest Hills. Casey construction hours generally run through about 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, though night work is slated to begin at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, the last scheduled day of bus replacement service. For more on the subway closures, please visit the T's Website.

Hammer Time

Sure, it takes heavy machinery to tear down the Casey Overpass. But it also takes a surprising amount of sheer human muscle, as seen in this photo of a Barletta Heavy Division worker hammering on the flyover on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Each weekday we post a “Photo of the Day” from around the neighborhood. If you have a photo that screams (or even whispers) "Jamaica Plain," here are four ways to nominate it:

See the Last Car to Ever Cross the Casey Overpass

A black Toyota Camry was the last car to ever cross the doomed Casey Overpass. The historic moment came at 3:53 p.m. on Saturday. The flyover carried traffic from when it opened in the mid-1950s to Saturday. It is being replaced with a network of surface roads. Here's how to get through the new configuration whether you're driving, biking or walking.
