MSPCA: Petition on Euthanized Cat Doesn’t Tell Whole Story

A petition drive launched by a Jamaica Plain cat owner after the MSPCA euthanized his pet leaves out key information about the elderly feline, the JP-based animal advocacy organization announced Wednesday. All parties agree that Dryden, who had six toes on each front paw, was old and sick. He didn't come back home the night of Sunday, Aug. 3. The cat's owner, Benjamin Day, went to the Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that Tuesday.

MSPCA Puts Down Cat While Owner Searches for Him

Dryden, a cat with six toes on each paw who enjoyed knocking over cups of water, never left Benjamin Day's JP yard. But when the elderly, sick cat didn't show back up one recent Sunday night, his owner started posting flyers. On Tuesday the owner checked in with the JP-based MSPCA to find that, only hours earlier, the animal welfare organization had euthanized his cat. Someone had picked up Dryden, possibly a well-meaning neighbor who didn't know the 14- or 15-year-old polydactl cat was being cared for by Day. Workers at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, seeing how thin the collarless, un-microchipped cat was, put him down within two days of him being brought to the facility.

Franklin Park Kitty, Circa 1928

For our "Throwback Thursday" Photo of the Day, we feature an image of old JP. Here's famous Boston photographer Leslie Jones capturing a moment with a cat in Franklin Park in November 1928. [selfie]

This photo is part of the Boston Public Library's cache of historical photos, many of them by Jones. This came from the "Animals: Dogs and Cats" album. Another place to look for historical photos of JP is the Historical Society's photo archive.

Ivy, the South Street Shop Cat

Each weekday we post a random image from around the neighborhood. Here is one of JP's well-known shop cats, Ivy of Ivy Insurance on South Street. She's philosophically framed by JP artist Lindsay Metivier. Of course Ivy is just one of the shop cats of South Street. Here's a little feature on "Monkey," the shop kitty who rules the portion of South closer to Forest Hills.

JP-Based Animal Welfare Group Takes in 139 Cats, Dogs and Birds From Hoarder

Nearly 200 sick animals rescued from a Lynnfield hoarder are being cared for by the JP-based MSPCA and South End-based Animal Rescue League. The hoarder, who isn't being named by the MSPCA, had a wide variety of animals: 27 dogs and puppies, 77 cats and kittens, 81 birds, six hedgehogs and eight reptiles including skinks and snakes. The good news is that all the animals are expected to recover. For more details on the conditions the animals had been subjected to, and the plans for caring for them, please visit the MSPCA and Animal Rescue League Web sites. If you'd like to donate to help these animals and others like them, here are links to donation pages for the MSPCA and Animal Rescue League.
