Councilor O’Malley Loves Girl Scout Cookies

Question: What is District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley's favorite Girl Scout Cookie? Jamaica Plain's Daisy Troop 67633 recently learned the answer to that very important question at the troop's first-ever Girl Scout Cookie Booth at the Curley K-8 School. O'Malley purchased several boxes of cookies, including Tagalongs, Thin Mints and his favorite -- Peanut Butter Patties -- on Dec. 20 from his local cookie entrepreneurs. Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts’ Cookie Program runs through early March and you can locate Girl Scout Cookies by zip code at girlscoutcookies.org.

Curley K-8 School Celebrates Reopening of Library, After Raising $100K+

Students, faculty and parents of the Curley K-8 School were joined by Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Public Schools staff to celebrate the long awaited reopening of the school's library on Thursday. The reopening of the library was due to more than $100,000 being raised by the Curley Library Committee, which was formed in the fall of 2015 when Principal Katie Grassa asked a group of teachers and parents to explore the possibility of reopening one central library to replace the school's two closed libraries. The library was closed in 2012 due to budget cuts under a previous school principal. "Donations of note include a JP resident who saw the 'Bring back the Curley Library' sign in the school yard, and expressed interest in donating $10,000, if we would design a matching fundraising campaign and market it throughout JP, not just within the Curley community," said Pam Yosca, a parent of two Curley School students, who also happens to be a librarian (not in Boston Public Schools), to Jamaica Plain News last year. "We launched that in [June 2017], to great success -- many JP residents contributed, often with notes citing their support for library services in BPS, or with dismay that the Curley libraries were shuttered." Yosca and fellow Curley School parent Ashely Rao are co-chairs of the library committee

“The opening of the Curley School Library demonstrates the power of community and its ability to affect positive change," said Mayor Walsh via press release.

Make a Difference as an Arnold Arboretum Field Study Guide

The Arnold Arboretum is looking for volunteers to lead outdoor life science school programs.

As spring passes into summer, we wrap up another remarkable school year of Field Study Experiences at the Arnold Arboretum, a period marked by vigorous growth and enthusiastic reception of our programs for elementary life science. We are delighted to report that more students from Boston Public Schools visited to learn in the Arboretum landscape this school year than ever before. Our success this year was made possible by a bumper crop of new, energetic, and motivated volunteer guides, enhancing the experience of students by providing interactions with a smaller ratio of adults to students. It is rare for young children to receive the level of focused attention enjoyed by students on field trips to the Arboretum—equally rare is the opportunity for kids to study nature, in the outdoors, uninterrupted over a two-hour period. These qualities characterize every Field Study Experience in our landscape, and give students the ability and tools to work for a morning as scientists do.

This Saturday students and staff members from four Jamaica Plain schools, and anyone else wanting to participate, are running in the 9th Annual Playworks Run for Recess 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Taking place on Franklin Park's cross country course adjacent to the zoo, funds raised will go to support play and physical activity in 140 elementary schools across New England. The annual Playworks Run for Recess 5K are presented by Playworks New England in partnership with the New Balance Foundation. The following schools from Jamaica Plain will be represented: Boston Teachers Union Pilot School, Joseph P. Manning Elementary School, Match Community Day School and Mary E. Curley K-8 School. Local team members will join an expected 1,000 participants, including students and families representing 49 elementary schools in the Greater Boston area, who will run with the collective goal of raising $15,000 for Playworks New England. In its 12th year, the nonprofit, which is part of a national organization, brings play and youth development programming into schools during recess as a means to improve the health and well-being of children and to enhance learning through the power of play.

Mayor Walsh: Imagine Boston, Imagine Jamaica Plain

Every spring, the city of Boston releases our Imagine Boston Capital Plan for the next five years. It outlines where our city’s budget will be focused, our longer-term plans, and our priorities. Essentially, the capital plan details what initiatives and projects in your neighborhood and across the city that we’ll be investing in to make Boston’s future brighter. From Jamaica Pond to the Curley K-8 School, it’s my priority to create growth and opportunity for every Bostonian in every neighborhood. Curley School Library, Closed in 2012, Reopening Thanks to Book Drive

The Curley K-8 School's library was forced to close in 2012 due to budget cuts, but a book drive led by the Curley Library Committee that began 18 months ago, will lead to the library reopening in February. The Curley Library Committee has actually raised an astonishing $97,000 during the last 18 months, said Pam Yosca, a parent of two Curley School students, who also happens to be a librarian (not in Boston Public Schools). "Donations of note include a JP resident who saw the 'Bring back the Curley Library' sign in the school yard, and expressed interest in donating $10,000, if we would design a matching fundraising campaign and market it throughout JP, not just within the Curley community," said Yosca to Jamaica Plain News. "We launched that in late June, to great success -- many JP residents contributed, often with notes citing their support for library services in BPS, or with dismay that the Curley libraries were shuttered." The Curley Library Committee was formed in the fall of 2015 when Principal Katie Grassa asked a group of teachers and parents to explore the possibility of reopening one central library to replace the school's two closed libraries.
