Jamaica Plain Dog Park on ‘Paws’ While New DCR Commish Evaluates Projects

Sorry Jamaica Plain dog lovers -- you're going to have wait longer for an off-leash dog park. Back in 2018, DCR announced that a location by Oakdale Street, which is already used as a renegade dog park, would be the site of a large off-leash dog park. Since then no shovels have hit the ground, merely just renegade paws. That leads us to February 5, 2020, when Jim Montgomery was named the new commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Montgomery decided to pause numerous proposed projects, including the Jamaica Plain dog park within the Southwest Corridor Park.

Online Petition for a Jamaica Plain Off-Leash Dog Park Gathering Support

Public support for a dog park in Jamaica Plain has gain steamed this week thanks to a MoveOn.org petition. The movement for a dog park was jumpstarted earlier this month after Boston's Park and Recreation Department said the Beecher Street Park would no longer be an off-leash dog park. Eva Kaniasty started the petition, which will be delivered to several local and state representatives, including District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley, who has requested a public meeting with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to discuss creating a dog park in JP.  Once the petition reaches 300 signatures, it will also be delivered to DCR Commissioner Leo Roy, the MassParks Paws Program, Board President of the Franklin Park Coalition Anita Morson-Matr, and Southwest Corridor Park Conservancy President Franco Campanello. The petition had close to 250 signatures as of Monday night only a few days after its creation.

Biblical Sunset

Remember that epic sunset a few weeks ago? Claudia Dunne of Forest Hills and the Dog Park Association of Southwest Boston captured this view above the station. Each weekday we post a “Photo of the Day” from around the neighborhood. If you have a photo that screams (or even whispers) "Jamaica Plain," here are four ways to nominate it:
