Video: 3-Year-Old Gives Amazing Tour Highlighting Jamaica Plain!

A young boy (and his mother) made an incredible one-minute video highlighting all of his favorite things about Jamaica Plain -- the restaurants, train stations, barber shop, libraries, bicycles, karate classes -- and more! Holding a toy train to start, Santiago Arroyo begins in front of the Egleston Square mural across from the T and makes his way to the Egleston Community Garden, and then moves on to restaurants by highlighting the original Chilacates, JP Licks (what kid doesn't like ice cream?), Pikalo, and Exodus Bagels. He shouts out all the bicycles to ride, neighborhood libraries and playgrounds, mentions he takes karate classes with his mother and grandmother(!), and talks up the firefighters of Engine 28. Then he really gets into the action -- by getting a trim at Flaco's Barber Shop, and a teeth cleaning at the Brookside Community Health Center. He ends by showcasing JP's T stops.

Holiday Open House to kick-off Urbano Project’s 10th Anniversary

Urbano Project kicks off its 10th Anniversary Celebration with a FREE Holiday Open House, sponsored by State Street Bank. There will be live music, art workshops and demonstrations, drinks, holiday snacks, and lots of cool prints created by Urbano’s artists for sale!  All happening at Urbano's gallery in the Brewery Complex, 29 Germania Street.  FREE admission. Join us at our studio/gallery for behind-the-scenes exhibition tours, a family-friendly drop-in origami workshop with Artist-in-Residence Erin Genia, a bookmaking class demonstration by Artist-in-Residence Rachel Allenand her Youth Artist Project students. The first in a series of events celebrating Urbano’s 10th Anniversary, this day-long event gives you a rare opportunity to take part in our organization’s daily projects and to hear firsthand from youth, staff, and artists about their current conversations around land and social issues. Help Send 30 Underprivileged Jamaica Plain Youths Go to Summer Camp

A local organization that works to empower residents and engage service providers to support Egleston Square is working with the local Boston Police Department to send 30 youths to a two-week summer camp. And they need your help! Tree of Life and the Boston Police Department's E-13 Community Service Youth Officers are hoping to raise $6,000 by May 31. That funding will provide food, transportation, and activities for 30 local youths -- which would double the amount of youths served by the camp last summer. Any donation is welcome, but here's a breakdown of specific activities and costs:

Sponsor a youth for a day, includes breakfast, lunch and an activity $30
Sponsor a youth for a week $150
Sponsor a youth for two weeks $300
Special ice cream trip for 30 campers $160
Trip to see a movie $400
Day of bowling and two meals for 30 campers $690

How to Make Egleston Square More Pleasant Being Discussed at JP/Rox Transportation Action Plan Meeting on Oct. 23

How can Egleston Square be a more pleasant place? That's a question that will be examined at the next JP/Rox Transportation Action Plan meeting on Oct. 23. At the meeting, the fourth on the topic of Egleston Square, Transportation Department personnel will discuss public feedback they received about two plans the city put forth to make the area safer to walk and travel through. A preview of actions items for the upcoming meeting will also be discussed, as well as priorities for the project.

Upcoming Pop-Ups for JP/Rox Transportation Action Plan; Feedback Wanted on Egleston Square Concepts

The city is holding three pop-up sessions this week to solicit feedback about the JP/Rox Transportation Action Plan. If you can't make it to the sessions you can also participate in an online poll, as well as submit feedback by Sept. 15, about two concepts to improve Egleston Square. These are the scheduled dates, times and locations for this week's pop-ups. They are subject to change due to weather.

Mayor Walsh Celebrates Main Streets, Honors Bizs & Volunteers of the Year

Mayor Marty Walsh wrapped up the 22nd Annual Boston Main Street Awards with the annual mayor's trolley tour to a dozen Main Street districts, including stopping off at two Jamaica Plain Main Street districts. Walsh visited the Egleston Square Main Streets district and the Jamaica Plain Centre/South Main Street (JPCSMS) district on July 11th. On South Street Walsh honored Kacy Hughes as the Volunteer of the Year and Fresh Hair Salon as the Business of the Year for JPCSMS.

In Egleston Square Walsh honored Northeastern University AIAS students as the Volunteers of the Year and Sandy Wireless as the Business of the Year. Christine Lau was named the Volunteer of the Year for Hyde/Jackson Square Main Streets, and El Oriental de Cuba Restaurant was named Business of the Year.

JP Porchfest is July 7th: Get Ready for 170 Performances on 90 Porches!

The 5th Annual Jamaica Plain Porchfest this Saturday will be more awesome than the previous four as it will include music, theater, dance, spoken word, storytelling, comedy, circus arts and a politicians' porch. "We have 90 generous porch hosts this year – that is, folks who offer their porches to performers. In some cases, people perform on their own porches, but they often welcome others," said Mindy Fried, co-organizer with Marie Ghitman and Eli Pabon. "And in many cases, porch hosts simply offer their porches to whomever we assign to their porches, of course taking into consideration their available space, and if they have any special requests." Egleston Farmers’ Market Kicking Off Season at Wake Up the Earth Festival

The Egleston Square Farmers’ Market will kick off its spring season on May 5th during the annual Wake Up the Earth Festival and open at its regular Egleston Square location the following Saturday on Germania Street. The neighborhood is looking forward to the excitement of the 2018 market. "I love how the Egleston Square Farmers' Market creates a destination in the neighborhood on Saturday mornings. I enjoy starting my summer weekends off with a trip to the market where I'll often pick up fresh produce and fish, hear about what else is growing in the fields, and find a tasty treat while catching up with a few neighbors,” said Jamaica Plain resident Kim Szeto. Vendors are also eager for the market to start up again to connect with the community.
