What is a progressive position on housing? That is the question that will be tackled at a JP Progressives community conversation on April 29. "The City of Boston is rapidly becoming more unequal and segregated than at any time in its recent history. Boston is one of the least affordable major housing markets in the world, and Massachusetts is one of the most unequal states in the country. Our community in Jamaica Plain is at the forefront of this crisis," says the description of the event on JP Progressives' Facebook page.

‘Black Lives Matter’ Sign Stolen From Church Lawn

Quietly, Jamaica Plain's First Baptist Church has been playing a role in the nation-wide "Black Lives Matter" movement. Last month, someone vandalized a large "Black Lives Matter" sign on the church lawn. This week, the sign was stolen entirely, stakes and all, reported Pastor Ashlee Wiest-Laird. A new sign is already on order, Wiest-Laird said in a Facebook post. Rev. Osagyefo Sekou and Wiest-Laird, among others from First Baptist, travelled to Ferguson, Mo.

What Future Do You See for Centre/South?

JP Centre/South Main Streets and the Jamaica Pond Association are hosting a series of meetings to discuss what vision the community has for land use along the corridor. How many stories should most buildings be on the stretch from Eliot to Pond? Jamaica Plain Church Members Arrested in Ferguson, Mo. Protest

A pastor and minister of music for First Baptist Church were among those who traveled from Boston to Ferguson, Mo. to protest the police killing of Michael Brown. The Boston Globe (subscription may be required) reports that Rev. Osagyefo Sekou, the Centre Street church's formation and justice pastor, and Colin Cushman, the historic church's minister of music, were both arrested. Several members of the congregation took the trip to Ferguson, including Rev. Ashlee Wiest-Laird, head pastor. Other Jamaica Plain residents also made the trip, including Nataleah Turner.
