The proliferation of "Little Libraries" is being seen from South Korea to Qatar. There are at least five in Jamaica Plain. According to a story in The Atlantic, the unofficial libraries are booming around the world. The map in the gallery above just shows libraries created in the "Little Free Library" network. It doesn't show many do-it-yourself efforts, like the one across from the JP Branch Library built by the Karma Carpenter.

A JP man who hammers and nails for justice under the name "Karma Carpenter" promised the neighborhood a new one.

But now someone with the nom d'square rule "Karma Carpenter" is promising the neighborhood a new one. For now, a simple wood box is serving as a placeholder atop the electrical box at the corner of Bardwell and South streets. That's kitty-cornered from the larger-scale JP Branch Library.

JP Little Library Reportedly Gone or Damaged

A quirky bit of neighborhood character — the JP Little Library — is reportedly gone. JP resident Charlie McEnerney said he went by the unofficial lending library at the corner of Bardwell and South streets and found it gone. Twitter user Fran Harrington said the Little Library was knocked off and on the ground when he rode by recently. "I have faith it will be fixed/replaced soon," Harrington wrote. Jamaica Plain News hasn't been able to stop by the scene and verify the exact status of the Little Library, but we wanted to bring you this update as soon as we heard!
