If you're interested in volunteering please contact Erica Cannon at 617-477-9406 or email email@example.com.
Jamaica Plain's Latin Quarter has some big news this week! First, it is being designated an official Massachusetts Cultural District. Second, a $100,000 federal grant was awarded to Boston, which will be used to produce a cultural district plan that will include artists in residence who will work with area youth and the community to create cultural vibrancy projects. More than a year ago the Hyde Square Task Force (HSTF) began trying to obtain the cultural district designation from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and on Thursday the HSTF will hold a press conference in front of the Blessed Sacrament Church on Centre Street to announce the grant and the new cultural district. Two years ago the city designated the Hyde and Jackson Squares neighborhood as Boston's Latin Quarter, and now it will be known as the Latin Quarter Cultural District, becoming Boston's fourth cultural district.
UPDATE: The sidewalk sale has been postponed until September 8th due to project inclement weather. More than 45 businesses will turn their stores and restaurants inside out for you to stroll, shop and eat during the 4th Annual Inside Out Sidewalk Sale along Centre Street on May 19. The sale will be along Centre Street from Jackson Square to Hyde Square and beyond during the sidewalk sale being presented by Hyde Jackson Square Main Street. You'll have the chance to enjoy food from neighborhood restaurants from five continents (sorry Australia and Antarctica), great shopping with sale items, a balloon artist, a juggler and outdoor live music all to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of Hyde and Jackson Squares, also known as Boston's Latin Quarter. Click here for an updated list of participating businesses.
The Hyde Square Task Force is holding a public meeting on May 7th to hear your opinion about the Hyde/Jackson Square neighborhood that was previously designated as Boston's Latin Quarter by the city. The Hyde Square Task Force wants to hear your input about the future of the Latin Quarter -- its strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. We'd like to know what kinds of arts and cultural events should be held, how to visually-brand the neighborhood, how to make everyone feel comfortable at Latin Quarter events and more. There will be a focus group at Hyde Square Task Force (361 Centre St., behind the Blessed Sacrament Church) on Monday, May 7th at 6 pm. There will be refreshments and a light dinner for participants.
