JP Progressives’ Suffolk County District Attorney and Sheriff Forums on July 13

JP Progressives next political forums will look at criminal justice with separate forums for Suffolk County District Attorney and Suffolk Country Sheriff on July 13. The Suffolk County District Attorney's forum will be with current DA Kevin Hayden, who became DA after Rachael Rollins was appointed U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, and District 5 City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo. The sheriff's race will be with incumbent Steve Tompkins and Sandy Zamor Calixte. The forum will be on Wednesday, July 13 at 7 pm via zoom. Please register here to attend the forum online.

Residents Invited to Testify at Boston City Council District 6 Redistricting Hearing on March 31

The public is invited to offer testimony during a Boston City Council Redistricting Committee hearing focused on District 6 on March 31. District 5 City Councilor (and Suffolk County District Attorney candidate) Ricardo Arroyo will lead the hearing as chair of the committee. The majority of Jamaica Plain consists of District 6, but there is a little bit of Districts 4 and 7 in Jamaica Plain, too. Public testimony regarding redistricting from residents of Districts 4, 5 and 6 will occur at City Hall on March 31 at 6:30 pm. Read the public notice here.

Mayor Walsh Declares Racism a Public Health Crisis and Reallocates BPD Overtime $

Saying that Boston needs to be a leader in battling racism, Mayor Marty Walsh declared racism a public health crisis. He also announced that 20% or $12 million of the Boston Police Department's overtime budget will be reallocated as investments in equity and inclusion in the city. "In Boston, we embrace the opportunity this moment and this movement offers us," said Walsh on Friday. "We stand with our Black community and communities of color to lead the change toward a more just and equitable society. With these actions, we will increase equity in public safety and public health, and launch a conversation that can produce lasting, systemic change to eliminate all the ways that racism and inequality harm our residents."
