‘Adopt’ a Piece of Footlight Club History

After 80 years the Footlight Club is getting new theater seats in a few weeks. That means the old seats gotta go -- and you have the chance to take home several of the seats. Seat Adoption Day is Saturday, Oct. 14th from 10 am to 2 pm. People are welcome to "adopt" a two-seat unit for a donation of $50 or "adopt" a four-seat unit for a donation of $100, according to The Footlight Club's Facebook page.

Footlight Club’s ‘Peter and The Starcatcher’ Opens Sept. 16th

The tale of Peter Pan flying into Wendy Darling's bedroom, fighting Captain Hook and toying around with Tinkerbell are well known -- but how did Peter Pan become Peter Pan? The Footlight Club's production of "Peter and the Starcatcher," opening Sept. 16th in Jamaica Plain, will provide insight into the genesis of Peter and why he never wanted to grow up. The family-friendly Tony Award winning Broadway play recently became available for community theaters to perform, and kicks off The Footlight Club's 141st season. "'Peter and the Starcatcher' upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan becomes Peter Pan," said director and choreographer Julia Deter.

Photos: Groovy ‘Promises, Promises’ Opens at The Footlight Club Friday

The Footlight Club's latest production, Neil Simon's "Promises, Promises," which opens Friday, provides a campy look at the office culture of 1960s, a la "Mad Men." "Promises, Promises" provides a colorful, groovy look at 1968 while featuring music by Burt Bacharach and lyrics by Hal David. The stage production is also a musical adaptation of 1960 movie "The Apartment," starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine. The Footlight Club's production features colorful vintage costumes by David Alger and Judy Maggs. Director Jamie Alley’s structured the musical similar to 1960s variety shows such as "The Dean Martin Show" and "Laugh-In."

Musical ‘Big’ at The Footlight Club Through November 19

Remember Tom Hanks as 12-year-old Josh Baskin in the 1988 hit movie? Catch it as a musical at The Footlight Club through November 19. Baskin is a 12-year-old who is transformed into a grown man overnight after making a wish to the arcade machine Zoltar Speaks. Find out how he copes with this new world when he has to do adult things, like get a job and dates a co-worker. In the end he discovers there's much more to being an adult than being big.

Footlight Club Receives $5,000 Grant

On Saturday, October 24, Tufts Health Plan Foundation donated $5,000 to The Footlight Club in Jamaica Plain as part of a newly created Corporate Citizenship campaign that encourages community participation and contributions. The Footlight Club's Volunteers Director Elizabeth Bean works for Tufts Health Plan and recently participated in their "Corporate Citizenship Pledge Campaign." All workers who participate in the program to support non-profits with donated time and money have their name entered into a drawing to win $5,000 towards a charity of their choice. We are so appreciative of Liz’s efforts to support the theater and for the Tufts Health Plan Foundation for supporting employee volunteerism.

Final weekend for The Cat’s Meow

Final performances of The Cat’s Meow this weekend at The Footlight Club. The play is based on the true story of a 1924 murder aboard William Randolph Hearst’s yacht. Guests on board include Charlie Chaplin, movie star Marion Davies, and movie mogul Thomas Ince. Alumni of JP’s Footlight Club Makes It Big on ‘Inside Amy Schumer’

Well-placed sources in the JP acting community confirm that Mike Houston, an alumni of the neighborhood's Footlight Club, is appearing regularly on Comedy Central's "Inside Amy Schumer." In the above clip, (which has NSFW language), Houston plays "Jeff" as he attempts to learn the secrets of Female Emotional Combat. In addition to the above skit, Houston was in this season's (highly NSFW) "Twelve Angry Men." He and members of his troupe, The Collective, often appear on the show. Houston's first appearance with the Footlight Club was in Psycho Beach Party.
