We'll update this list as we learn of other openings. This kind of information can change fast, so I do recommend calling before you head over.

Local Author Publishes Crime Novel

The debut novel of local author J. M. Taylor, Night of the Furies, is a dark noir set in Boston during the first half of the twentieth century. It brings to life a Boston long past – a city where meetings at the Old Howard were a secret kept between father and son, where Scollay Square never slept, and where violent crime lurked in every dirty corner. The story is bookended by two events that are classic myths of Boston – the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 and the Red Sox “Impossible Dream” season of 1967. In between, Taylor visits other points familiar and not so much, including the Cocoanut Grove Fire, and the Statler Hotel robbery, which was the biggest heist ever in Boston, until the Brinks Job two days later. “Nobody remembers second place,” Taylor says about the crime, which his fictional characters commit.

JP Music Festival Fête Raises Nearly $1K

We're only 72 hours away from the opening chords of the Fourth Annual Jamaica Plain Music Festival. Last week, the latest fundraiser for the celebration of local music and musicians brought in nearly $1,000. The all-volunteer effort to bring more than 20 bands to Pinebank Field (for free), well, it ain't cheap. Last Monday, supporters of the festival gathered at Tres Gatos for a $15-a-head fundraiser. Entertainment included music from Tallahassee and tunes from DJ Phil Wilcox.

Before It Raises the Roof, Here’s How the JP Music Festival Raises the Money

Running a free community event like the JP Music Festival is great fun — even behind the scenes. The festival itself brings together the people of JP and Boston (and many Brooklinites sneak over the border) to celebrate great, local, live music. Every year the thousands of people who come discover just how much amazing musical talent lives and works in our ‘hood. As a group of JP residents (okay, a couple of us have migrated to Dorchester), part of the fun of putting on a free community event is raising the money to pull it all off. The committee is led by Rick Berlin and Shamus Moynihan as co-producers and the festival committee is currently Margie Nicoll, Kellie Cardone, Justin McCarthy, Ferris Mueller, and Charles McEnerney.

Patio season is in full swing. You might think you know every outdoor restaurant space in the neighborhood, but click through — you may find some you didn't know about. My bet for best patio some of you might've missed is the nicely designed space behind Simpli Bar & Bites in Forest Hills. Of course it's hard to make a gallery like this comprehensive. Please add any omissions in the comment section or email me at chris@jamaicaplainnews.com and I'll add a photo.
