Chilean Photography Exhibition Opens at Urbano Project on Aug. 30th

La Victoria: Resilience & Creativity, an exhibition of photographs by the SALTO Collective examining issues of belonging and identity in their home city of Santiago, Chile, will be on view at Urbano Project starting August 30. An opening celebration will take place on Sept. 5 from 6 to 8 om, with a talk by Chilean-American writer and human rights activist Marjorie Agosin. The exhibit runs through Oct. 5.

Urbano Project Awarded $100,000 Grant to Support Youth Artist Projects

Local nonprofit Urbano Project has received a grant of $100,000 from the Cummings Foundation’s ‘$100K for 100’ program. The Urbano Project is located at the Brewery Complex in Egleston Square, and is one of 100 local nonprofits chosen from a total of 597 applicants to receive a Cummings Foundation $100K for 100 grant, including fellow Jamaica Plain nonprofit Boston Scores. Urbano Project is a non-profit community art studio that fosters public and participatory art as a vehicle for personal transformation, community cohesion and social change. Bringing together professional artists, local youth, and community members to learn and experiment through place-based projects, the organization promotes the model of the artist as citizen, actively engaged in conversations with our community through the lens of contemporary art. Urbano supports youth to become civically engaged artists as they are challenged to tackle current social issues in their community that directly affect their lives.

Urbano Project Presenting David Buckley Borden’s ‘Proposed Futures: Then and Now’

Environmental challenges are continually increasing. Ecological awareness is the foundation of environmental action and proactive stewardship. Artist and designer David Buckley Borden’s creative use of the “proposal” provokes us to imagine a variety of environmental futures and urges us to do more for the planet in "Proposed Futures: Then and Now." Informed by ecological research and community engagement, Borden explores a collaborative approach to environmental education through accessible art and design, ranging from speculative design proposals to installations in both the gallery and the landscape. ​Urbano Project is hosting "David Buckley Borden | Proposed Futures: Then and Now," an exhibition exploring how art and design can foster cultural cohesion around environmental issues and help inform ecology-minded decision-making, March 30 – May 17, 2018.

Tortilla Social Opening Reception

An opening reception for the Tortilla Social final exhibition will be held on Friday, December 8, 6-9pm at the Urbano Project in JP's Brewery Complex. Featuring the premiere of the Mini Tortilla Social Documentary video co-produced by Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Faizal Westcott & Darren Cole, the event will celebrate the building of community by sharing food and art. An exhibition of prints created during workshops held this fall will be on view at Urbano, December 8, 2017 - March 2, 2018. The Tortilla Social exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public. Urbano’s Gallery at 29 Germania Street in Jamaica Plain is open Monday-Friday, 1-6pm and Saturday, 10-2pm.

Bilingual Public Conversation on Value of Boston’s Immigrants on Thursday in JP

WBUR's Louise Kennedy will moderate a conversation on the value of, and challenges to Boston's rich immigrant community inspired by Nora Valdez's Immigration Nation art exhibit at the Urbano Project. Immigration Nation is a visual art installation that consists of more than 400 suitcases made by immigrants who came to the US. To create the exhibition Valdez held workshops for several months reaching out to people of all ages, asking them to create their own suitcase that showed their own personal immigration story. Valdez led workshops at Urbano Project, Boston Evening Academy in Roxbury, the Woods Mullen Homeless Shelter in Dorchester, the Fenway High School, her own studio and throughout Egleston Square. Kennedy will be joined by guest panelists Alejandra St. Guillen (Director of Immigrant Advancement, City of Boston), Anthony Marino (Director of Legal Services, Irish International Immigrant Center), and artist Nora Valdez.

Art Installation Features 400 Suitcases Showcasing Journeys of American Immigrants

An visual art installation opening this week at the Urbano Project called Immigration Nation consists of more than 400 suitcases made by immigrants who came to the US. The art installation by Dorchester artist Nora Valdez will be on view at the Urbano Project (29 Germania St.) from May 24 through July 30, 2017. There will be opening reception, free and open to the public, on Wednesday, May 24, from 6 to 8 pm. “This project is to show that this nation is made mostly by immigrants, and for us to feel proud of where we come from and to celebrate the diversity that makes this country great," said Valdez via press release. "Immigration Nation is a vehicle for immigrants to share their individual journeys using suitcases.

Urbano Project Hosts Music, Poetry and Art Series at Librería Donceles

Urbano Project is pleased to announce a series of bilingual salon-like gatherings to be held at Librería Donceles, a participatory art installation and meeting place for the community in JP's Brewery Complex. Events include an homage to Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos on Feb. 17th, a performance by Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Fernandito Ferrer on Feb. 22nd, a book arts workshop with Sara Rivera and Denise Delgado on March 4th; and a book launch/story slam with Suzanne Skees, author of "My Job: Real People at Work Around the World" on March 16th. More events, presented in partnership with local organizations, will be announced throughout the winter.

Boston’s Only Spanish Language Used Bookstore, Libreria Donceles, Opens at Urbano Project in JP

Urbano Project will present Librería Donceles, a socially-engaged art project consisting of an itinerant bookstore of more than 10,000 used books in Spanish. While in residence at Urbano, the participatory art installation will be a meeting place for the community, hosting a series of bilingual salon-like gatherings for conversations, performances and workshops designed to encourage cultural understanding, tolerance and social activism. On view January 13th through March 31, 2017, Librería Donceles will be open Monday through Friday, 1 to 6 pm and Saturday, 10 to 2 pm, at Urbano's Gallery space at 29 Germania Street in Jamaica Plain. An opening reception took place on January 13, which included an artist talk and performance at 7:30 pm. Created by New York-based artist and educator Pablo Helguera out of a desire to address the lack of literary outlets that serve the growing Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States, Librería Donceles will be the sole Spanish-language bookstore in the Greater Boston area, bringing attention to the fact that there are millions of Spanish speakers in the US and yet a scarcity of books in Spanish.

Who Is My Neighbor? Darren Alexander Cole Exhibition at Urbano Project

Urbano Project is delighted to announce it will host Darren Alexander Cole’s exhibition, Who is My Neighbor? from July 28th to September 9th at its Jamaica Plain gallery space at 29 Germania Street. Cole’s solo exhibition will feature an interactive multi-media installation (projection, sound, and video) to explore issues of community transparency in the context of Boston’s Egleston Square. Who is my neighbor? interacts with the neighborhood’s relationship to public space, light, and sound, to connect place, community awareness, and a moment in time. Driven by Cole’e belief that communities can grow when important matters are transparent, his installation enables viewers to see themselves in terms of common interests and constructive dialogues.

Salvador Jiménez-Flores Exhibition Debuts at Urbano Project, Addresses Social Issues

Salvador Jiménez-Flores’s art exhibition, I Am Not Who You Think I Am, will debut at the Urbano Project on April 29th in its Jamaica Plain gallery space as part of ArtWeek Boston. The debut will also include a talk with Jiménez-Flores. Salvador’s exhibition utilizes ceramics, installation, prints and video and explores a fusion of myth, history, religion, politics and pop culture. Salvador's work is known for addressing social issues that affect his community and identity as a Mexican-born artist living in the US. “Urbano is proud to showcase the talent of one of our current resident teaching artists, Salvador Jiménez-Flores,” said Stella Aguirre McGregor, Urbano Project's executive director through a press release.
