Boston Lyric Opera presents its new production of Jules Massenet’s melodic, romantic French opera Werther, starring Alex Richardson at the title character and Dedham, Mass.-based mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy as his unrequited love Charlotte.

Werther is loosely based on Goethe’s revolutionary 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, about a passionate and obsessive writer who chases a love he cannot have and cannot forget. Performed in French, Werther tells the tragic story of a young poet tortured by his unrequited love for Charlotte, who rejects him despite her attraction to him.

The production is directed by Crystal Manich, a renowned international stage director. Music Director David Angus conducts. Richardson makes his BLO debut as Werther. Eddy returns to BLO as Charlotte. The cast also includes John Hancock, Rachele Gilmore, Jon Jurgens, David McFerrin, and James Demler.
