Mission Hill School Teacher From JP Charged With Improper Touching of Child

A Jamaica Plain man who taught at Mission Hill K-8 has been accused of improperly touching an 8-year-old at a Boston hospital. Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley announced that Juan P. Cortes, 25, was arraigned Monday on one charged of indecent assault and battery on a child. Boston Public Schools put the teacher on administrative leave, Conley's office said in a statement. CBS Boston reports that Cortes is a teacher at the Mission Hill School, which shares the Margarita Muñiz Academy in the former Agassiz School on Child Street. The two-school campus was in the news Friday after a Muñiz Academy student was stabbed in a fight outside the school.

Extra Cops Will Be on Duty This Week at Former Agassiz After Stabbing

The principal of Margarita Muñiz Academy explained in a robo-call to parents that people from outside the school community set upon two students Friday, leaving one with a stab wound. Boston Police confirmed Friday that a student was stabbed outside what used to be the Agassiz School on Child Street. The person's injuries aren't life-threatening. Police say the victim, a 17-year-old according to the Boston Globe, was taken to Brigham & Women's Hospital for treatment after the incident, which took place about 12:40 p.m.

In a recorded phone call to parents, a transcript of which Boston Public Schools shared with Universal Hub and the Globe, Principal Dania Vásquez said the incident took place just after school had let out at 12:30 p.m.

"We want you to know that safety is extremely important to us for all our students, families and staff inside and outside of the school building," the call said in part. Police say a few kids ran from the scene.
