Kenneth Lamour, 21, of Hyde Park, was the man shot to death on Centre Street between the Monument and Murray Circle on Monday, according to prosecutors.
His alleged killer, Josiah Zachery, 18, is also from Hyde Park.
Jamaica Plain News is seeking full information on Lamour. We have confirmed with the Suffolk County District Attorney's office that his record included an alleged stomp-down of a Department of Youth Services worker when he was 18.
In that 2011 incident, the worker had been punched to the ground by another resident of the Connelly Youth Center in Roslindale. The worker was on the floor convulsing when Lamour allegedly stomped him and kicked him several times. The worker suffered a broken nose and other serious injuries.
Officers Take Fire
Boston Police Officer Neva Coakley said Wednesday's incident began about 10:32 a.m. in the area of 891 Centre St. According to police, an officer on patrol heard the shot and went to investigate. He saw one victim on the ground. He and other officers chased two suspects, at least one of whom shot at them. In shows of restraint praised by Police Commissioner William Evans, the officers did not return fire.
Two people were initially taken into custody. Police have charged Zachery, the alleged killer, with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and assault by means of a dangerous weapon on a police officer.
Coakley said some or all of those involved in the incident were part of the Roca Program, which aims to help the city's most "at-risk" young men to leave lives of crime.
Centre Street from Murray Circle to the Monument, plus several residential streets, remained closed for hours as police processed the area and searched for evidence.
A white van bearing the lettering "Roca Property Services" was towed from the scene.
A Roca official told Jamaica Plain News the social service agency couldn't comment on a matter that's an ongoing police investigation, but that the incident was "deeply saddening."
