This week Blanchards on Centre Street replaced its iconic neon sign, which dated to the 1960s, with a new one. The new version is already taking on some of the charm of the oft-malfunctioning original. For instance, on Friday evening, an “N” was already out.
It took two years of talks with the city to agree on a new version of the sign, the package store’s manager said when the sign was taken down Wednesday. The new version is very similar, put no longer advertises the parking lot.
The old sign suffered from frequent letter outages and had cost thousands in repairs over the years.
