JP Centre/South, Three Squares Main Streets Receive Thousands for Program Funding

The Boston Main Streets Foundation recently awarded $32,500 in Impact & Innovation Grants to seven Boston Main Streets Districts, including two local Jamaica Plain Main Street programs.

JP Centre/South Main Streets received $3,500 for a First Thursday Scavenger Hunt, and Three Squares Main Street (formerly Hyde Jackson Square Main Street) received $5,000 for the Hyde Square Mode Shift initiative. The $3,500 to JP Centre/South Main Streets will go to 10 First Thursday Scavenger Hunts that will highlight six businesses with a monthly theme such as art, food, gifts, health, or kids. The scavenger hunts will utilize the JP Centre/South StriveOn app, which was launched in 2018 and utilizes a multi-media approach to shopping the district. When the user finds and visits the business featured in the scavenger hunt, that business will provide a sample, a taste, a free gift or discount with purchase, a 5-minute class, a quick tour, or any number of ways that are available to them to engage the visitor in their business. The goal of the scavenger hunts is to promote late Thursday business hours and create new, more successful revenue opportunities for the businesses in the district.

Annual JP Dog Parade, Costume and Fashion Show on Oct. 26

Ruth Barker Ginsberg and 50 Shades of Grey(hound) were two of the best costumes at last year's annual Jamaica Plain Canine Costume Parade. What will dogs be sporting this year?? The 16th Annual JP Dog Parade, Costume & Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, October 26, starting at the First Baptist Church (633 Centre St.,) with signups starting at noon. The rolling rally parade will make its way down Centre Street with a police escort -- no word on whether the K-9 unit will be participating. The parade will finish at the Loring-Greenough House where costumed dogs (and their owners/guardians/life coaches) will strut on the red carpet.

Centre Street Bizs Burglarized, Doors Smashed; Security Tips Provided to Commercial Shops

Centre Street businesses J.C. Fruit Shop and When Pigs Fly recently had their front doors shattered, and had cash and items stolen. Both businesses were broken into during the early morning of May 12. J.C. Fruit Shop (606 Centre St.,) and When Pigs Fly (613 Centre St.) have since reopened, according to an email from JP Centre/South Main Streets. JP Centre/South Main Streets sent out the email to area businesses, letting them know about the robberies, and provided tips on how commercial stores can protect themselves:

Empty your cash register each night and DISPLAY your empty cash drawer in full view of the street when closed. Often burglars are looking for cash that is kept in cash drawers overnight.

Survey Asks: How Do You Feel About Parklets on South and Centre Streets?

How do you feel about parklets, or mini-parks, being in Jamaica Plain this summer? That's the topic for a JP Centre/South Main Streets survey. Installing parklets is a city initiative throughout Main Streets districts for this summer. "A Parklet repurposes part of the street, typically one or two parking spaces, into a public space in which people can gather and socialize. In cities across the country, Parklets play an important role in neighborhood placemaking, encouraging community interactions and a vibrant street life," says a Boston.gov document about the initiative.

Jamaica Plain's dogs showed off their creative side on Sunday at the 15th Annual JP Dog Parade, Costume & Fashion Show. There were two Supreme Court Justices, nurses, turtles, superheroes, dinosaurs, skunks, rainbows and more! Participants met at the First Baptist Church and then paraded down Centre Street to the Loring-Greenough House for the fashion show. A fun-loving crowd laughed, cheered, oooohed and ahhhhhed as adorable pups (and their owners) strutted up and down the red carpet. All proceeds for the event benefited the City of Boston's Animal Shelter.
