New Biz: Bakery + Coffee Shop + Record Store = Monumental Market

A unique business venture recently opened on South Street. Monumental Market is a joint venture between three different businesses: Lavender Bee Baking Co., El Colombiano Coffee, and Light of Day Records. The individual businesses are known entities in our area. El Colombiano Coffee and Light of Day Records are both regular vendors at the Egleston Farmers Market. While building their brands, the two businesses traveled to different businesses, including the Wake Up The Earth Festival.

Fresh Hair Salon Closing After 37 Years of Cutting Hair

Longtime South Street business Fresh Hair will be closing its doors for the last time in the next week after being open for 37 years in Jamaica Plain. Salon ownership announced the closure this past fall through its customer newsletter. How do you feel about parklets, or mini-parks, being in Jamaica Plain this summer? That's the topic for a JP Centre/South Main Streets survey. Installing parklets is a city initiative throughout Main Streets districts for this summer. "A Parklet repurposes part of the street, typically one or two parking spaces, into a public space in which people can gather and socialize. In cities across the country, Parklets play an important role in neighborhood placemaking, encouraging community interactions and a vibrant street life," says a Boston.gov document about the initiative.

Three Bizs to Open Joint Venture in Old Monumental Cupcakes Locale on South Street

A trio of local businesses will open in the South Street storefront that last housed Monumental Cupcakes, which alluded to a future "monumental" business opening in its place when it closed in January. The Lavender Bee Baking Co., Tipping Cow Ice Cream, and El Colombiano Coffee will come together in a novel venture called the Monumental Market, according to Boston Magazine. El Colombiano Coffee is often a vendor at the Egleston Farmers Market. The store will be a bakery and cafe, serving ice cream and all products will be nut-free. “We want to keep JP funky and vibrant, and use the space for the community to hold art shows, pop-ups, and other cool events.
